Aqualina

Samui, Thailand

Three variations of villa type were to be repeated over a 16000 sqm site close to the beach in the north of Koh Samui, enjoying expansive views toward Koh Phagnan* and the straight that separates the two islands.

Gfab are undertaking architectural, interior and landscape design for the project as well as acting as the master planners for the project. In response to the islands new planning laws which demand 80% of living spaces are located under a pitched roof, our response was to make the roof the dominant feature of the design.

The roof extends all the way to the floor and features a series of stepped planters irrigated by an integrated system intended to recycle water, bringing a new conception to the notion of the grass roofed tropical house. Beneath this, the common areas are treated to soaring double height spaces with mezzanine studies.

High level operable louvres and minimally detailed doors, combined with reflecting pools to draw air, allow the property to enjoy good natural cross ventilation whilst still being able to be closed up and mechanically ventilated if the occupants wish.

A total of 18 villas were planned along with staff/back of house areas, and a small restaurant/ clubhouse intended to serve as a multifunction space for weddings, parties and conferences or simply as a ‘hang out’ spot for the villa owners. A single villa was undertaken and remains pristine, the developer has been trying to sell the site for some time and the future of the project remains unclear.
