BASK Gili Meno
Gili Islands, Indonesia

Design Phase   : 2013 – 2014
Status                : Scheduled for 2017 completion

With BASK, GFAB worked with one of the world’s leading creative directors to develop the design of a new type of beach resort with a particularly relaxed style. The site is unique, set on one of the famed Gili Islands off Lombok, bordered on one side by almost 300 m of white sand beach whilst to its rear, it borders a lake with views towards Mount Rinjani in Lombok.

The design called for a number of villa types which are intended for sale and operation on a “lease back” program.  A large beach club, intended to attract outside guests acts as its focal point, featuring a restaurant headed by one of the world’s top chefs. Rather than defer to the usual “kit” based construction preferred on these small atolls, GFAB sought to offer something with a similar, raw, natural feel, whilst benefiting from passive cooling offered by concrete construction and roof gardens.

Local fishing villas, with their thatched roofs and bamboo frames, serve as inspiration for the resort’s architectural design. Concrete, bearing the marks of its timber shuttering was selected as the primary building material and makes up much of both the internal and external appearance of the building. A single timber lattice screen design is essentially the only other element used in the composition of the buildings.
